Business management
  Small business training

The reason you need a manager is to do everything possible to help the employees be as successful as they can be. To deprive them of the help they need to be ever more successful is self destructive behavior because the business will not prosper and grow, and neither will income. If they are coached and the business grows, the consequences will be positive and desirable. Success will create success and be a positive reinforcer.

Choosing a tangible goal is the first step in reaching it. However, people must have the means to reach it. Also, if the employees either do not have a system, or they have not used a system that they were given to achieve the desired end, the goal cannot be reached. Either way, employees need enough supervision to make things work. Why? They probably are not achievers, but rather, they are good employees.

People can become satisfied with the status quo. In their heads, they feel they are paid enough. Therefore, they are not moved to do anything more to earn any more money because they do not feel worthy of more. Either they must work for more, with you dragging them, kicking and screaming all the way to the bank, or failing that, they need to be replaced with employees who feel they are worth more and will do the work to achieve it. In this regard, the price for remediation is far less in time, effort and money than replacement is.

The problem with the status quo is that is that everything is falling behind. The only thing that goes down is the temperature at night. Everything else goes up. Property taxes go up. Service costs go up. Trash pickup goes up. Yellow Pages ads prices go up. The cost of utilities goes up. On a personal level, the cost of medical insurance goes up. The cost of gasoline goes up. Mortgage rates go up. It goes on, but if you don’t keep up with price rises, you are falling behind and losing money as your buying power decreases.

So, how successful do you need the employees to be? The answer is that business must grow at least 5% a year, or it is falling behind increasing expenses, and everyone is slowly becoming impoverished; poorer, not richer, as the buying power of your money drops as prices continue to rise.

It is not desirable to have to solve a problem. Instead, it is better to work with staff to improve performance and results and compliment them on any improvement. Positive reinforcement for positive results will produce more positive results. Staff will feel most flattered by the personal attention you are giving them, and if the process is broken down into simple steps and systemized, they can continue to achieve success.

The challenge here is that if you delegate the task of following a system, part of the process is following up to determine if they are indeed following the system, and how it works. If the desired results are not being achieved, the system needs to be modified. Even the best system won’t produce the desired results if it is not used. Employees expect what the manager inspects. What is ignored is lost in the shuffle.

While a manager works in the business, the leader works on the business. The leader’s job is to insure the continuing and long term success of the business. This is done by following the market, determining what the market wants from the business, and how to profitably give the market what it wants.
