Precsion Decision

Posted: June 4, 2010, 4:05 PM

You can only make good decisions if you have good information. Big businesses seem to suffer from disinformation and misinformation. Why is that?

The higher up you go, the more filtered the information becomes. “Yes men” tell you what you want to hear, not what is. No one wants to rock the boat, even if it is sinking.

Of course you feel good if things seem to be good. However, it does no good to hide the truth. Only with full and correct knowledge can good decisions be made.

Is this a symptom of only big business? Not necessarily.

I am small business. I had three full time employees. I had a fourth employee who interfaced between front line employees and me. He told me what I wanted to hear, how valuable he was, and how I could not function without him.

However, the numbers told a different story. He was reluctant to institute price increases, even though there was no history to say no to this practice. Finally, I had to fire him because he was doing more harm to the business than good. We had become friends and this was painful to me, but necessary.

So, why are people motivated to not tell the truth? Maybe they are afraid that the messenger will be shot. Maybe they are concerned about losing their job. Maybe they are concerned about being ostracized in the work place.

If you were a business owner, would you want the truth, and if you got it, would you be able to handle it? I must know what is going on as I do not have the luxury of hiding my head in the sand.

I am in a highly competitive market place and, like everyone else, dealing with the current poor economy. The market is still there but smaller and more price conscious. As such, my job is to try to capture a larger share of market, so as to keep us moving forward.

Ignorance is not bliss, it is death. If you have trusted sources giving you dysfunctional information, you are on your death bed. Reality rules, good or bad.

Be sure you are getting the information you need to decide a course of action that will benefit your business and you.
